Dumpster Doll: Adolescence
A Personal Introduction
(Michelle Mays)
Excerpts: Adolescence
“Whether that light comes from learning new skills, a kind gesture from a stranger, or just picking up the pieces, brushing yourself off, and moving on, life does continue. Learning the hard way was all I ever knew, and it was the most effective teacher.”
“The confines of my cell were more freeing than the supposed freedom of being at home. I was free from defending, masking, or hiding myself.”
“I contemplated life and my place in this world.... I thought about it all: where I’d come from and how much I’d already survived in my fourteen years on the earth. The deck was certainly stacked against me; I’d fought and clawed to survive. ...I’d overcome so much, risen above all the crap and already beaten the odds more times than some people who have lived a lifetime.”
Excerpts: The Early Years
“Just like concentric ripples in still water when a stone is tossed in, the far-reaching effects of neglect and abuse continue from generation to generation. It takes a conscious decision and a strong will to break the cycle.”
“Childhood memories tend to be foggy and disjointed. We have the tendency to recall only bits and pieces of any given event. However, some memories are so intricately woven into the tapestry of our being that we cannot escape them, no matter how hard we try.”
About the Authors
Michelle Mays
Michelle Mays is not just a story teller, she has a story to tell.
Amidst horrifying living situations, unthinkable abuse, challenging life hurdles and consequences, Michelle is a survivor who fought her way through a darkness unimaginable.
The Dumpster Doll book series is a real-life account of the experiences that led her to become a child of the foster care system—what transpired before, during and after—the good, the bad and the uglier. With a courageous vulnerability unlike any other, Michelle opens her heart to share recollections of her most personal and dire circumstances.
Overcoming what most could not brave, Michelle has become a successful data analyst and book author; she’s shared a fulfilled relationship with her loving husband of 20 years and is the mother of three accomplished sons.
As the founder and CEO of the FosterHub non-profit, and a motivational speaker with the goal to bring awareness to a taboo topic, an often overlooked demographic and system default, Michelle’s plight is to ensure that each and every foster child may seek and obtain the support they need to assure no one suffers through the tragic life events that she endured.
FosterHub is a 501(c)3 charity dedicated to lend assistance to our foster youth who are aging out of the system. The organization's initiative is to offer a helping hand (resources, tools and guidance) to foster teens to enable these deserving children a fighting chance--to navigate through life in their early years and ensure a successful future.
